18 TV Shows That Ended With More Questions Than Answers

Whenever a television show ends, audiences expect all the unanswered questions to be explained, wrapping up precisely what happened within the series. Anything short of that only proves to be frustrating due to the time that has been put in, but there are times when a show will finish without doing that. Sometimes, that can be because the series is cut earlier than planned, but there are occasions when things end on time but still need to clarify everything that fans want to know.

Heroes

Heroes was a brilliant television show that made the superhero genre more relatable by having the powers go to everyday people. Despite that, much like classic superheroes, they all opted to keep their powers secret from the public as best they could. But in the final episode, Claire opted to showcase her healing power, and audiences couldn’t determine the reaction. That was just one of many questions people had that weren’t tapped into.

Alf

Alf was light-hearted and fun for most of its run, so the fact that the show ends with Alf being captured by a task force was a shift in tone. It could’ve opened up a fun storyline if it returned, but instead, no more episodes took place, and people never knew if Alf escaped or what happened to him next.

Mork & Mindy

Mork & Mindy helped to launch Robin Williams’ career, as he became a household name due to his performances in the show. But it did leave audiences with a huge unanswered question as Mork and Mindy were stuck wandering through time after their home was destroyed. People wanted to know what happened to them, but they were left on this cliffhanger instead.

Parks and Recreation

The last episode of Parks and Recreation covered a lot, which impressed many fans. However, one big question that wasn’t appropriately answered was whether Leslie Knope would become the President of the United States. While it was hinted at, more clarity was needed.

Modern Family

Modern Family is a brilliant sitcom that provides plenty of humor, but it does so in a documentary-style setup. The characters consistently speak directly to the camera, but it’s never revealed why or who they’re talking to. It’s a similar style to The Office, but audiences know why that’s happening. However, it isn’t clear with Modern Family, which they did because the co-creator didn’t feel it was right.

My Name Is Earl

The entire plot of this show is about Earl attempting to finish his list of righting some of the wrongs he’s done throughout his life due to the power of karma. Therefore, the fact that the show doesn’t prove whether or not Earl finishes it causes a lot of frustration among people.

iCarly

Throughout the original run of this show, Carly’s mom wasn’t shown, which led to a big question of who she was. Considering how big of a situation that was, the revival had the chance to answer it, but the series still failed to do so. Carly’s mom is part of the final episode, but not showing her on camera felt frustrating.

Watchmen

Watchmen might have only existed for one season, but the show was created to satisfy people for that long time. Even with that in mind, the series still left lingering questions, such as whether or not Angela is becoming the new Doctor Manhattan.

Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad is often considered one of the greatest shows of all time, but it leaves a major unanswered question about whether or not Jesse Pinkman escapes. This question is answered in the El Camino spinoff movie, but the answers aren’t provided in the television show itself, and not everyone has gone to seek out further content to get the answers.

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is one of the biggest television shows ever, but the ending disappointed many people. For some reason, the final season was rushed and condensed regarding the number of episodes, which left a lot on the table. Situations such as what Bran’s powers truly were or whether Jon Snow’s true identity is revealed are unanswered.

Mad Men

Mad Men has a large ensemble cast, so wrapping everything up would always be challenging. The ending for Don Draper was purposefully left unclear, but people did want to know whether he managed to find peace. Elsewhere, there are questions over Michael’s sanity, whether Sal finally revealed his sexuality, or what happened to the Francis family after Betty passed away.

Santa Clarita Diet

The big question left at Santa Clarita Diet’s end was whether Joel turned into a zombie. After Sheila bit him, his fate was very much up in the air, and audiences were frustrated that they never found out the answers.

Glow

Because Netflix canceled Glow, the show finished with many questions that still needed to be answered. Despite the popularity of the wrestling-based series, the fact that it was cut meant that the showrunners couldn’t wrap things up.

Six Feet Under

Six Feet Under did a terrific job of wrapping up a lot of questions that people had, which was a difficult task heading into it. But it did leave one big one on the table, as Lisa’s fate was never clarified. While her death was apparent, people wanted to know more about what had happened, considering how important she was as a character.

How I Met Your Father

Considering the title of this show, there’s one huge question that needs to be addressed, and the series fails to address that. Whether or not the series felt it would run longer than it did like its predecessor and the answer could come later, the fact that the biggest question wasn’t revealed was a shame.

Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders had many questions heading into its final episode, and while it managed to wrap up more than most people expected, many remained unanswered. Whether it was whether Tommy told people about Michael or what he whispered to Duke, there was plenty people wanted to know. Fortunately, there’s a spinoff movie coming, and that provides the chance for some answers to be provided.

Lost

Throughout Lost, the show tended to provide drastic twists and major surprises that people didn’t see coming. This kept people guessing, but at the same time, it raised tons of questions throughout its lifespan, and ultimately, the show could not answer many of them by the end.

The Sopranos

The Sopranos is often considered one of the greatest television shows ever, but it does end on a cliffhanger. Tony is sitting in a diner waiting for his family, but audiences presume that someone else is coming to meet and kill him instead. Different people enter, and the tension continues to boil, yet rather than showing what happens, the series purposefully leaves the question unanswered.
